Assisted Living Pet Policy

Merrill Gardens recognizes the enjoyment and companionship pets provide their owners. Pets are welcome in the Community as long as they do not become a nuisance or threat to the safety and comfort of others, or do not cause property damage. While accommodations may be made for pet owners, established guidelines reflect the Community's responsibility for the safety, comfort and convenience of all residents. The Community has the discretion to allow pets based upon the Community needs and expectations.

Pets Permitted

In general, residents may bring into the Community a total of two of the following types of household pets. Exceptions must be approved by the General Manager. The General Manager must approve all pets prior to acceptance. A designated staff member will assess the pet for behavior, discipline, grooming, disposition, size and compatibility with the Community's environment.

Dogs

• Under 50 pounds at maturity. (Special permission is required for larger dogs, unless specially trained companion or Seeing Eye dog)
• Spayed or neutered
• Housebroken
• Controlled from barking that disrupts the harmonious environment of the Community
• Trained to walk on a leash, and under basic voice command

Cats

• Spayed or neutered
• Housebroken
• Declawed preferred, but if not declawed, cat must have approved scratching post material

Birds

• Pairs are acceptable
• Large talking birds require special permission

Fish

• Approved on a case-by-case basis by General Manager

Pricing for Pet Accommodations and Services

There is a nonrefundable surcharge for pet owners. The Community may also offer services for pet owners, which will be billed on a monthly basis. Pricing for services offered pet owners will be at the Community's discretion, and will be based upon market rates, Community layout, and staffing availability. Communities will also have discretion for the types of services offered.  Please contact the Community directly to inquire about prices and services offered.

Pet Identification

All pets have identification with the name and phone number of the responsible resident.
