Fitness Tips for Seniors

|

Living an active lifestyle comes with endless benefits. A study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health revealed compelling evidence that older individuals in the United States who maintain an active life experience a slower rate of memory decline. Engaging in exercise and social activities among seniors can significantly reduce feelings of loneliness and depression.

As we are officially into the last month of summer, here are great summer activities that seniors can participate in.

Water exercises

Water aerobics is an excellent workout option for seniors, especially during hot weather. Water exercises allow individuals to perform physical activities without placing excessive strain on joints. Water aerobics can also alleviate arthritis and joint discomfort while promoting improved bone density and muscle strength. Some water exercises seniors can try include:

  • Flutter kicks

  • Aqua jogging

  • Dancing

  • Standing push-ups

  • Water yoga

Balloon Volleyball

Balloon volleyball is a light-hearted alternative to traditional volleyball that minimizes the risk of injury and joint pain. All that is needed is an inflated balloon or beach ball and a few people to participate. Seniors can share laughs as they try to keep the balloon from touching the ground.

Gardening

With the weather being so nice out and flowers blooming everywhere, it's the perfect time for seniors to explore the world of gardening. Engaging in gardening not only allows you to stay active, but also provides an opportunity to embrace the beauty of the outdoors while nurturing plants.

Walking Contest

Seniors can come together to create a walking contest that adds an element of excitement to their daily routines. The contest can be structured to recognize and reward achievements, further fueling their motivation. One way to make it more enjoyable is by incorporating prizes and trophies for participation.

Explore Local Culture

Staying active doesn't have to feel like hard work. For seniors who may have been confined during winter, immersing themselves in local culture can offer an enriching experience while getting some extra steps in. Visiting museums, libraries, art shows, restaurants, or farmer's markets can be a fun way to engage both the mind and body while enjoying the vibrant aspects of the community.
